After The Thaw

International film-as-performance company Almost Human present their first venture into film production, ‘After The Thaw’, a music video for Scottish acoustic songwriter, Lorkin O’Reilly. Merging traditional film making with stop motion animation, ‘After The Thaw’ explores constructed fantasies, loss and destruction, and the gentle, melancholic warmth that longing provides us when we find ourselves missing someone, or something. A man has designed a model world in which to lose himself, but when he exacts his frustrations with his constructed fantasy upon the model itself, he finds his battle to remain there could destroy the very fabric of its being, Meanwhile, […]

Creating “After The Thaw”

This autumn we made the music video for Lorkin O’Reilly’s After the Thaw. See the behind-the-scenes pictures and a blog post on creating images with music by Almost Human Alec here!   “I have been exercising. 10 km on the exercise bike. 3 sets of 30 pull ups. 3 sets of 10 press ups. 3 sets of 30 curls with weights. Yoga also. All at a fairly mild pace. I end by lying on the ground, resting. Trying to clear my mind. I always have a record on. Today it was the self titled album by The Knife. My eyes […]

10 Steps on How To Perform a Piece of Experimental Theatre Abroad in 5 Days

The scenario is a familiar one. You have a piece of experimental theatre featuring a 2×3 meter green screen, two large miniature sets and a suitcase full of Foley-art material. You know, the usual. Now you want to bring this performance to The Acco Festival of Alternative Israeli Theatre. What do you pack? How do you prepare? What are you preparing for? The self-help gurus at Almost Human share their experiences to make your theatrical shenanigans feasible.   1. Get the band back together. Lisa, Alec, Fraser and Roos needed two extra team members to make Letters from Another Island […]

October update

It’s been a busy few weeks for the team. Before we all set off to Barnstaple for shooting the After the Thaw music video, Almost Human Lisa has a few updates on what else we’re up to…   “Almost Human’s recent travels in Israel brought us new trials, new rewards and new adventures. Performing at the Acco Festival of Alternative Theatre in the North of the country, we found ourselves negotiating with British Airways, performing in a 2000 year old citadel, and taking a huge amount of selfies with a group of Chinese performers! It was a fantastic adventure and […]

Amongst Ghosts and Robots

“Together: A Story of Forgetting” was presented as a pre-documentation of Together at the exhibition Amongst Ghosts and Robots at the Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam in June 2015. This was its accompanying text.   “Place for me is the locus of desire. Places have influenced my life as much as, perhaps more than, people. I fall for (or into) places faster and less conditionally than I do for people.” -Lucy Lippard[1]   There are many terms to define a site: Space, place, landscape, city, country, the French wine term terroir or perhaps, region, territory, location, and many more. As a […]

When We Grow Up We’ll Be Old

In June Almost Human had a meeting with heritage, youth and arts organisations in Barnstaple about the possibility of staging a large scale performance involving young people in the Barnstaple Pannier Market, an indoor space used for market traders in the town, and a nightly hangout for young people. This was in response to a previous meeting almost a year ago with organisers, performers and associates of Barnstaple Fringe TheatreFest, where we had all discussed ways in which the festival can associate and resonate more with the local Barnstaple community. In the meeting, we pitched a production of ‘When We […]

Through the Audience’s Eyes

Our site-specific performance Together took place in Barnstaple this June, with great success. Now, two months later, we finally developed the pictures that were taken on disposable cameras during the shows. But what’s so special about these pictures is that we didn’t take them. Neither did we ask a professional photographer to take care of the show’s documentation. One of the participants, the Tourist, always embarked on a quest to find a small disposable camera inside the Queen’s Theatre; armed with their camera they were asked to document the town. What is important? What do you see? What is overlooked? The […]

Back to Letters

Blog post by Almost Human Fraser on returning to work on Letters from Another Island, to perform in Acco.   “An email comes in from another company member with a link to After the Thaw, which is in preparation of the new project of making a music video. It begains to play over the voice recrding being listened to, it distracts from learning those lines from the first show. Old scripts, concerns about getting our stuff to Israel, remembering lines, ‘do we need to bring more lights?’. The issues leading up to mounting a show in another country and continent. […]
